Urbana Fire Division, Fire District, Open Burn Policy
Statewide Burn Ban:
Each year, a statewide burn ban is in effect. This ban prohibits outdoor open burning statewide in unincorporated areas during the months of March, April, May, October, and November between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. This ban includes burning of yard waste, trash, and debris, even in a proper burn barrel.

Permitted Open Burning:
General Open Burning Requirements
Open burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions or when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances such as fire hazards shall be prohibited.
The Urbana Fire Division can authorize the extinguishment of a fire by fire division personnel, permit holders, or another person responsible.
Disposal of land-clearing waste shall require an EPA Permit:

Definitions:
Residential Waste: Includes trees, tree trimmings, branches, stumps, brush, weeds, leaves, grass, shrubbery, and yard clippings generated on residential property as a result of household activities.
Agricultural Waste: Materials generated by crop, horticultural, or livestock production, generated on property.
Land clearing waste: Plant waste material removed from the land for the purpose of rendering the land useful for residential, commercial, industrial, and/or new agricultural development.
- Campfires
- Recreational fires
- Cooking fires
- Warming fires
- The fuel for the fire shall be either clean seasoned firewood, natural gas, or equivalent.
- The fire shall be no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height
- The fire shall be constantly attended
- Responsible parties shall have approved extinguishment immediately available
- At least 25 feet from a structure
- At least 15 feet from a structure in approved containers
- At least 10 feet from structure when using outdoor cooking grills
- Burning of trash and garbage
- Cardboard
- Residential waste
- Residential waste
- Agriculture waste
- Fire cannot create visibility hazard on roadways
- Fire is located no less than 1000 feet from an inhabited neighboring structure
- Fire shall be constantly attended until extinguished
