South High Street Improvements, PID #112019 (CHP-S. High Street)
This project will reconstruct South High Street between Lewis B. Moore Drive (SR 55) and Miami Street (US 36). Under development since the completion of a Corridor Study in February 2019, this project is designed to better serve the traveling needs of the public. Specifically, the project will provide improved pedestrian and bicycle access, address traffic-safety related concerns, address inadequate stormwater control, and provide improved on-street parking where appropriate. In addition, the project will include roadway reconstruction, new curb and sidewalk, installation of a storm sewer system, shared lane markings, and traffic calming measures. Furthermore, the project will include the replacement of water lines and sanitary sewer lines within certain blocks of the project corridor.
The prime contractor for this project will be R.B. Jergens Contractors, Inc. of Vandalia, and the project inspection consultant for this project will be True Inspection Services LLC of Urbana. The construction contract amount for this project is $6,733,425.85 with federal, state, and local funding in place to fund the project.
The South High Street Improvements Project (CHP-S. High Street) (ODOT PID #112019) is scheduled to start construction on Monday, July 10, 2023. Final completion of the project is anticipated on or before October 31, 2024 with construction being completed in phases.

Week of September 25, 2023:
South High Street remains closed to thru traffic from Miami Street to State Route 55 (Lewis B. Moore Drive). The prime contractor, R.B. Jergens Contractors, Inc. has completed the installation of the new water main from Miami Street to College Street with a few remaining water services to be switched over to the new water main this week.
The sanitary sewer main installation in the 200 Block of West Water Street has been completed, and this block remains closed to thru traffic. With the sanitary sewer installation now complete, the contractor will continue to run the new stormwater main in this same block. In addition, the contractor plans to continue with the installation of the new stormwater main on South High Street between West Water Street and West Reynolds Street.
Lastly, the contractor has started the block by block roadway reconstruction of South High Street from Miami Street southward with road grading started in preparation for the installation of the new curb and gutter along the street. By mid-October, the contractor plans to start the installation of the new curb and gutter from Miami Street southward to the intersection with either West Water Street or West Reynolds Street. Base asphalt and driveway installation will follow in the blocks where the new curb and gutter is to be installed this fall.
