Urbana, Ohio

City of Urbana Water Division

Our mission is to produce, treat, distribute, and protect the drinking water resource that serves the citizens of Urbana. Urbana Water Division pumps over half of a billion gallons of drinking water every year. Hundreds of samples are collected annually to ensure the safety of the finished product.

Urbana’s Public Water System provides safe, reliable water for far more than just drinking. Water is an essential resource that supports homes, businesses, public services, and critical infrastructure throughout our community.

Supporting Industry and Essential Services
Local industrial facilities rely on significant volumes of water for cooling systems, manufacturing processes, and operational controls. Clean water also plays a vital role in wastewater treatment, helping maintain environmental standards and public health.

Protecting Our Community
Our water system serves as an important resource for fire protection. Hundreds of fire hydrants, fire sprinkler systems, and approximately 2.25 million gallons of elevated water storage capacity help provide the water supply needed by firefighters and fire prevention professionals to protect lives and property.

Committed to Quality and Sustainability
Drinking water is a precious resource that requires continuous attention, expertise, and investment. Dedicated professionals work every day to ensure that Urbana’s water remains safe, dependable, and sustainable for current and future generations.

Contact the Water Division
If you have questions about your water service, water quality, or any aspect of Urbana’s Public Water System, please contact the Water Division. Our team is committed to providing information and addressing concerns.

Water Distribution

The city of Urbana services roughly 87 miles of distribution mains ranging from 2” to 16”. Service lines connect to these mains to supply water to the customer. 2 booster stations pump water from the low-pressure zone to the high-pressure zone on the east end. Roughly 5500 service connections are metered by our Remote-Read Mueller Meters. Most fire supply mains are unmetered. Occasionally, work on the water mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines require excavations or water service to be temporarily shut-down. Rarely do these events require boil orders or water use advisories. You can find out more at the link below.
WATER ADVISORY FAQ's

Lead and Galvanized Service Lines

Lead service lines are present in many of the older parts of town that have not had main replacement projects. The EPA will require the city of Urbana to have submitted a lead service line replacement plan by November 2027. We are working with “Get the Lead Out” to finalize our plan currently.

More information about lead and galvanized service lines can be found here: Lead FAQ

Required Lead Mapping
Under an Ohio law enacted in June 2016, public water systems are now required to identify areas that are known to contain or likely to contain lead services lines by March 9, 2017.  The law requires community water systems to identify and map areas of their distribution systems that are known or likely to contain lead service lines. The maps will be used by Ohio EPA to ensure that the proper lead and copper sampling is done in areas of lead service lines.

The City of Urbana's map can be viewed by clicking here. We keep an up-to-date record of our service line material inventories which can be found here: 2026 Service Line Inventory

For questions or help navigating this document please contact the Water Division Offices. If you believe your material is different than the information we have listed please call 937-652-4335.

Backflow Prevention
Backflow prevention devices isolate the distribution system from potential cross-connection or sources of contamination. These devices must be tested annually. Replacement or repairs must be made to failed devices to stay in compliance. More information on backflows can be found here:  Ordinance: Chapter 940

Water Treatment

The City of Urbana Water Division operates two water treatment facilities: the Old Troy Pike Treatment Plant and the SR 29 Treatment Plant. At the Old Troy Pike facility, water is treated using Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration and then disinfected before entering the distribution system. The SR 29 facility uses pressure filtration to remove naturally occurring iron and manganese, followed by disinfection prior to distribution.

Water from both treatment plants is combined within the distribution system to provide a consistent supply throughout the city. Because both well fields draw from the same high-yield aquifer, water quality and chemistry remain stable and reliable year-round.

Consumer Confidence Report

Every year Urbana compiles a Consumer Confidence Report that outlines information about your drinking water including: a table of detected contaminants, lead & copper reporting, emerging contaminants, public notice of violation, and other useful bits of information. You can find links to the most recent report below along with past reports.

UCMR (Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule)

Unregulated contaminants are those for which U.S. EPA has not established drinking water standards. The purpose of unregulated contaminant monitoring is to assist EPA in determining the occurrence of these contaminants in drinking water and whether future regulation is warranted. In 2023 Urbana participated in the fifth round of the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5). You can find results of those tests and past testing below.

UCMR 5 Results

AGWM (Ambient Ground Water Monitoring)
Testing is performed on the raw water before treatment processes. These results help Urbana monitor changes, plan for new treatment strategies, and gauge the efficacy of current treatment practices. AGWM tests for a large range of potential contaminants as well as normal dissolved minerals typically present in ground water.  The links below will take you to these results.
