ORBIS Breaks Ground on Urbana, Ohio Plant Expansion
OCONOMOWOC, Wis. — Oct. 4, 2022 — ORBIS® Corporation, an international leader in reusable packaging, has broken ground on an expansion of its manufacturing facility located in Urbana, Ohio. This new facility will expand an already existing ORBIS plant, located at 200 Elm St, adding 30% more space for the manufacture of totes, bulk containers and pallets. This will add more presses and tools to increase capacity and shorten lead times. Coupled with its favorable geographic location for freight optimization, the Urbana plant expansion will help ORBIS better serve its customers. [READ FULL PRESS RELEASE HERE] On Tuesday, August 2, 2022, A&B Asphalt Corporation and its subcontractors are scheduled to start work on the City of Urbana’s 2022 Asphalt Program. All work is weather permitting. Parking restrictions will be posted within work areas, and vehicles parked in violation will be towed. In addition, flaggers will be used to maintain traffic.
Under this program, the following streets are scheduled to be resurfaced: Tanglewood Drive; Nova Drive from Camelot Drive to Eastview Drive; Eastview Drive from Scioto Street (State Route 29) to Seville Drive; Seville Drive from New Haven Drive to Parkway Boulevard; Long Bay Drive from Seville Drive to Parkway Boulevard; Parview Court; and Lippencott Lane. Project work is scheduled to start with milling of the existing pavement on streets that are slated for resurfacing. After milling, pavement repairs will be made to the existing pavement. Once the milling process and pavement repair work is complete, a subcontractor is scheduled to chip seal all of the streets that are planned for resurfacing. Chip sealing is installed as an interlayer to reduce future cracking and moisture penetration between the existing asphalt and the new pavement surface and is intended only as a temporary driving surface. Once the chip sealing is completed, the final surface course will be installed with the adjustment of manholes and water valves and pavement striping where required to follow. This work is under contract for $712,911.36 and includes paving projects at Melvin Miller Park. For the projects at Melvin Miller Park, the City of Urbana has secured $49,666.00 in grant funding through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ NatureWorks Program to pave and resurface a parking lot and driveways and to improve the existing pickleball courts. After Labor Day, American Pavements, Inc. is under contract to complete crack sealing of multiple city streets at a cost of $47,543.38. In August, in cooperation with Salem Township and with grant funding through the Ohio Public Works Commission, Dellinger Road between North Main Street and Clark Road/East Lawn Avenue is scheduled to be resurfaced at a cost of $132,029.50 with the city’s share being $15,010.89. Lastly, before the end of the 2022 paving season, an ODOT Urban Resurfacing Project will be undertaken on South Main Street between Pearce Place and Market Street and on North Main Street between Court Street and Washington Avenue/Gwynne Street. For that project, the city is required to provide 20% of the project cost with the low bid for that project being $925,870.94. On Friday, September 24, 2021, The Shelly Company and its subcontractors are scheduled to start work on the City of Urbana’s 2021 Asphalt Program. All work is weather permitting. Parking restrictions will be posted within work areas, and vehicles parked in violation will be towed. In addition, flaggers will be used by the contractor to maintain traffic.
Under this program, the following streets are scheduled to be resurfaced: Crescent Drive between Finch Street and Ames Avenue; Ames Avenue between Scioto Street and Amherst Drive; Patrick Avenue between Scioto Street and South Jefferson Avenue (State Route 54), Washington Avenue between North Main Street and East Lawn Avenue; Carson Street between Boyce Street and Urbana High School; Glenn Avenue between Miami Street and just north of West Court Street; West Court Street between Glenn Avenue and North Oakland Street; West Court Street between North Edgewood Avenue and the eastern dead end of West Court Street; West Church Street between North Rohrer Street and North Edgewood Avenue; and South Rohrer Street between Miami Street and South Oakland Street. In addition, full depth pavement repairs are planned on Muzzy Road. Project work is scheduled to start with milling of the existing pavement on streets that are slated for resurfacing. This milling work will be completed by a subcontractor and is anticipated to take approximately three days. After milling, pavement repairs will be made to the existing pavement. Once the milling process and pavement repair work is complete, a subcontractor is scheduled to chip seal the existing pavement surfaces on Ames Avenue, Patrick Avenue, Carson Street, Glenn Avenue, West Court Street, West Church Street, and South Rohrer Street. Chip sealing is installed as an interlayer to reduce future cracking and moisture penetration between the existing asphalt and the new pavement surface and is intended only as a temporary driving surface. The pavement resurfacing work by The Shelly Company, including the full depth repairs on Muzzy Road, is anticipated to take approximately 6 days to complete with scheduling planned to avoid interruptions near the Urbana High School campus. Once all paving work is completed, subcontractors will adjust manholes and water valves and restripe pavement markings where required. This work is under contract for $504,357.88 and is the final part of the city’s planned asphalt maintenance and paving projects for 2021. Earlier this summer, Strawser Construction, Inc. completed the crack sealing of multiple streets around the city at a final cost of $49,146.90. The Aero-Mark Company also completed pavement striping within the city earlier this year at a cost of $6,350.30. In addition, Scioto Street was paved through an ODOT project with city being required to contribute 20% of the cost or $123,984.00. In total, these four projects represent a local investment in 2021 of $683,839.08 into the maintenance and improvement of existing city streets. On Tuesday, September 22, 2020 and Wednesday, September 23, 2020, a subcontractor is scheduled to mill the existing pavement that is slated for resurfacing. The following week, on Monday, September 28, 2020 and Tuesday, September 29, 2020, the Shelly Company is scheduled to complete the planned pavement repairs. On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, a subcontractor is scheduled to chip seal the existing pavement surfaces on West Light Street, Mosgrove Street, Gwynne Street, West Ward Street, Elm Street, Ann Street, Hitt Street, and Elbert Street. Chip sealing is installed as an interlayer to reduce future cracking and moisture penetration between the existing asphalt and the new pavement surface and is intended only as a temporary driving surface. The pavement resurfacing work by The Shelly Company is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2020; Friday, October 2, 2020; and Monday, October 5, 2020. Once all paving work is completed, subcontractors will adjust manholes as well as restripe the parking lot that is being paved. This work is under contract for $269,995.20 and is the final portion of the city’s planned asphalt maintenance and paving projects for 2020. Earlier this summer, Bituminous Pavement Systems completed the crack sealing of multiple streets citywide at a cost of $44,550.50. During August, Strawser Construction, Inc. microsurfaced East Water Street and East Lawn Avenue at a final cost of $130,785.34. These three projects represent a local investment in 2020 of $445,331.04 into the maintenance and improvement of existing city streets. During the week of August 17, 2020, M&T Excavating LLC and its subcontractors will mobilize to start work on the City of Urbana’s Phase 2A Water & Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project. This project encompasses the replacement of the existing sanitary sewer main and laterals on Scioto Street between Jefferson Avenue and the US 36/SR29 intersection near Berwick Drive/Bon Air Drive. In addition, this project will replace deteriorating water mains on Scioto Street between Jefferson Avenue and Berwick Drive; Crescent Drive; Finch Street; and Ames Avenue. As part of the water main replacement project, service lines from the main to the curb stop, fire hydrants, and valves will also be replaced.
Throughout the project, two-way traffic will be maintained on Scioto Street through a series of phased traffic control plans. In addition to one lane being maintained in each direction, Scioto Street will also continue to have a center two-way left turn lane throughout most of the project phases. To accommodate the phased traffic control plans on Scioto Street, traffic signals will be temporarily modified. For the work on Crescent Drive, Ames Avenue, and Finch Street, appropriate signage and barricades will be placed as needed to restrict these roadways to local traffic only. In addition to traffic being maintained throughout the project on Scioto Street, access to businesses will also be maintained. The purpose of this water main replacement project is to replace aging, deteriorating water mains that have experienced frequent, historic breakage. During the planning process for the water main replacement project, the sanitary sewer main was inspected and determined to warrant replacement on Scioto Street. This construction project is under contract for $1,730,090.59 with $1,398,489.79 of the project cost being water related and the remaining $331,600.80 being sanitary sewer related. To fund this construction, the City of Urbana has obtained low interest loan funding from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for the water portion and the Ohio Water Development Authority for the sanitary sewer portion. The construction will be completed in two phases with the work on Scioto Street starting in August and being completed on or before November 13, 2020. The replacement sanitary sewer on Scioto Street will be installed first with the replacement water main on Scioto Street being installed second. By the fall completion date, these installations will be completed on Scioto Street, and the trenches will be repaired and other restoration work completed. Scioto Street is scheduled for complete resurfacing in the summer of 2021 under a separate ODOT Urban Resurfacing Program. Between November 13, 2020 and June 26, 2021, the contractor will be completing the water main installation work on Crescent Drive, Ames Avenue, and Finch Street. Depending on the weather during the winter months, the contractor may periodically be forced to cease work on the project. In addition to the water main replacement work on Crescent Drive, the sidewalk and curb and gutter will be replaced on Crescent Drive in accordance with a council resolution. By the summer 2021 completion date, the work on Crescent Drive, Ames Avenue, and Finch Street will be completed. As part of the project, trenches will be repaired with new asphalt and other restoration work will be completed. However, the complete resurfacing of Crescent Drive and Ames Avenue will be undertaken under a separate city contract later in 2021. On Monday, August 10, 2020, Strawser Construction, Inc. of Columbus is scheduled to start work on the City of Urbana’s 2020 Microsurfacing Program. All work is weather permitting. Parking restrictions will be posted within work areas, and vehicles parked in violation will be towed. In addition, flaggers will be used by the contractor to maintain traffic. Brief closures of cross streets are possible. Prior to the microsurfacing work, a subcontractor will remove the existing pavement markings. After the microsurfacing work is completed, temporary pavement markings will be installed on the new surface, followed by permanent markings about two weeks later. This work is under contract for $130,037.63 and is a portion of the city’s planned asphalt maintenance and paving projects for 2020. Under this program, the following streets are scheduled to be microsurfaced: East Water Street from South Main Street to Finch Street and East Lawn Avenue from Scioto Street to Bloomfield Avenue. Microsurfacing is a pavement preservation technique that extends the useful life of the existing pavement. East Water Street was last resurfaced in 2006 and East Lawn Avenue was last resurfaced in 2009. Earlier this summer, Bituminous Pavement Systems completed the crack sealing of multiple streets citywide at a cost of $44,550.50. In September, asphalt resurfacing of several city streets under a separate contract with The Shelly Company is scheduled at a cost of $322,970.90. On Wednesday, July 8, 2020, RB Jergens Contractors, Inc. and its subcontractors were scheduled to re-mobilize to downtown Urbana to work toward completion of the remaining work items on the Monument Square Roundabout Improvement Project (US 36 & US 68 Intersection Improvement Project). Remaining work items on the project are as follows: repairs to the asphalt on Scioto Street and North Main Street and within the center circle of Monument Square; permanent striping of roadway markings, parking lines, and crosswalks; manhole adjustment; and water valve adjustment. After notifying the City of Urbana of its work schedule and posting no parking signs within the project area, the contractor cancelled the scheduled work and removed the no parking signage. The City of Urbana is awaiting a new start date to complete the project work.
Bituminous Pavement Systems (BPS) has had two productive days this week. They have completed crack sealing in the south half of town and are making progress in the north half. The rain today (5/28) and potentially tomorrow (5/29) will delay them further. Two to three days’ worth of work remains. Be watching for no parking signs on the routes planned for crack sealing.

Bituminous Pavement Systems (BPS) has had to delay the start of the crack seal program for the third day in a row on account of wet pavements. They will try again tomorrow (5/21) beginning in the south half of town. New “No Parking” signs will be placed where the contractor expects to be next week. Crack sealing operations throughout town will last a total of 4 to 5 days.
On Tuesday, May 19, 2020, RB Jergens Contractors, Inc. and its subcontractors will be remobilizing to downtown Urbana to complete the Monument Square Roundabout Improvement Project (US 36 & US 68 Intersection Improvement Project). The contractor will be completing remaining work items that were carried over from last fall, including final resurfacing on the project.
In early November of last year, daily and overnight temperatures were not conducive to completing all of the planned asphalt work due to asphalt placement specification requirements and limited availability of the high traffic asphalt mix being used on the project. Local and federal funding for the paving work was carried over from 2019 into 2020, and the contract was extended for completion by the end of May 2020. With daily temperatures now being ideal for the high traffic asphalt mix, the contractor has scheduled the paving work on Miami Street, South Main Street, and in the parking areas of Monument Square. In addition, the City and ODOT are stipulating replacement of at least portions of the surface course asphalt laid last fall on North Main Street and Scioto Street. To facilitate all of this work, the contractor will be posting no parking signage within the planned work areas in advance of each respective work phase. Remaining work items on the project are as follows: milling of existing asphalt surface; pavement repair of deteriorated areas prior to paving; final surface asphalt paving; permanent striping of roadway markings, parking lines, and crosswalks; manhole adjustment; and water valve adjustment. In addition to parking restrictions to allow for the work to be completed, daytime road closures will be required during the paving operations. A local detour will be in place during these daytime road closures. No work is scheduled for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, 2020. |
